The jazz waltz called “ Half and Half” features Charles Davison baritone saxophone. I have and love the 180g deluxe vinyl reissue.Ĭheck out Sonny Simmons on English horn (hardly ever heard in jazz) on “Nuttin’ Out Jones”: Besides, you want to hear Elvin Jones in the best way possible. Well-recorded music, especially drums, always sounds better in analog. Illumination! has been reissued on CD, but I’m of course partial to the vinyl. It felt like trying to shake hands with a baseball glove! I will always remember that when I shook Jones’s hand to say goodbye, I couldn’t get my hand around his big hand. I once interviewed Jones on Morning Becomes Eclectic and had a great time hearing about his life with Coltrane and beyond. Jimmy Garrison died young in 1976, Elvin Jones passed in 2004, Prince Lasha in 2008, and Charles Davis in 2016. McCoy Tyner and Sonny Simmons remain the last two living members of the sextet. “ Just Us Blues” is a 12-bar blues featuring Davis again. Jimmy Garrison’s “ Getting’ on Way” features Simmons on alto and Lasha on flute. Charles Davis solos on two numbers, and I have always loved his powerful solo on “ Half and Half.” The marching song “ Aborigines Dance in Scotland” has a highland feel, but most of the song is taken up by an extended solo by Elvin Jones. The bluesy “ Oriental Flower” shows off Elvin Jones’s beautiful drum brushwork. The opening track “ Nuttin’ Out Jones” features Sonny Simmons stretching out on English horn, an instrument hardly ever heard in jazz. I am always surprised by how little music comes on the many albums I’ve treasured since high school days. The six songs on Illumination! total only 31 minutes of music. This difference between their solos and the trio is what creates the frisson, the musical magic that makes this album unique. Like square pegs in round holes, Simmons (pictured below in a 1997 photo) and Lasha counter-balance the famous trio. Simmons’s and Lasha’s iconoclastic styles differ greatly from a Joe Henderson or a Wayne Shorter. Coltrane himself used little-known personnel for his titanic work Ascension. Miles Davis once said he’d rather hire new musicians who weren’t great rather than keep musicians he’d worked with for a long time or work with well-known jazz artists. As a result, solos that might have driven listeners to the exits instead combine into a wonderful, joyous whole. They stretch out the band toward the corners like a centrifugal force, but the powerhouse rhythm section always reigns it all back in. #Jimmy garrison freeYou hear the influence of Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy in Simmons’s and Lasha’s improvisations, and in general they display a more raw and free style than other prevailing horn players of the day. While Davis plays in a straight-ahead style, Lasha (pictured above in a 1982 photo taken in Amsterdam) and Simmons were part of the jazz avant-garde in the 1960’s, recording for ESP-Disk and other adventurous labels. Sonny Simmons plays alto sax and English horn, Prince Lasha (“La-Shay”) plays clarinet and flute, and Charles Davisis on baritone saxophone. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio on August 8, 1963, Illumination! also features lesser-known horn players who you’d think would never work in such illustrious company, but indeed they do. I’ve wondered why the trio moved away from Coltrane duties to record Illumination!, and wish I could ask the producer, the late Bob Thiele, how this album came about. This famous trio backed John Coltrane on his best-known Impulse! Records albums. It features one of the greatest-if not the greatest-rhythm sections in the history of jazz: McCoy Tyner, piano Jimmy Garrison, bass and Elvin Jones, drums. I find it an interesting study of contrasts and a very unusual album. I’ve recently spent a bit of time listening again to the 1963 album Illumination!, by the Elvin Jones/ Jimmy GarrisonSextet. Mantra is deeply integrated into Houdini for rendering of geometry, instances and volumes. Houdini mplay series#Houdini also supports renderers from many 3rd party ISVs including RenderMan, Arnold, OctaneRender, Redshift and V-Ray, which we will explore in part three of this series on Houdini. As a result, if Mantra is your primary render engine, choosing the fastest CPU for Houdini is top priority when making configuration choices. Because PBR is more conceptual than it is a strict set of rules, PBR implementation systems (and results) tend to vary.Īlso, like Renderman and Arnold, Mantra is a CPU-based renderer. Physically based rendering (PBR) as many of you probably know, refers to the use of realistic shading/lighting models along with measured surface values in representing real-world materials accurately. Mantra is a renderer that utilizes scanline, raytracing, and physically-based rendering. This lets you preview areas you’re interested in faster. You do have an option to ameliorate this however – if a render is updating in MPlay or the render view, you just tell Mantra to begin rendering that tile. Mantra renders by dividing the image up into tiles and rendering each tile individually – small tiles increase computer responsiveness, but can decrease overall performance. How important is a fast cache drive and RAM for Houdini?įrom solids destruction, fluid and particle sim, grain and fire effects and the demanding compute nature required for effectively producing these effects, we first want to look at how different Mediaworkstations perform using Houdini’s built-in render engine Mantra. What’s the recommended hardware configuration for Houdini?.Given the ability of Houdini to work effectively with large data sets, we want to look at the different steps making up a complete Houdini workflow in this three part article and determine: Houdini mplay software#What are the Best Houdini Software System Requirements? Houdini Engine plug-ins can be used to bring the Houdini Digital Assets into other apps such as Maya, 3ds Max, Renderman or Cinema 4D, or game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine while maintaining the asset’s procedural controls. Moreover, whether using Alembic, FBX or EXR, artists can easily work back and forth with a wide variety of DCC apps. Viewport and shelf tools add to your ability to work interactively while Houdini builds the networks. The ability to explore different iterations many levels deep on your content creation work within a node or node network provides an empowered environment for creative work. Houdini’s procedural workflow supports you as you create all of your CG content. In addition, Houdini provides content creation tools for modeling, rendering, character work and gamedev. There’s also the “intelligent” reacting to actions and variables in a shot which a procedural solution is ideal for, as it supports iteration and process control. Particles and dynamics in Houdini are perhaps the most powerful draw to VFX Artists, VFX supervisors and teams using Houdini – a procedural workflow that’s non-destructive is ideal for creating such assets. But first, we’d like to break down Houdini mechanics a bit more so you see what steps and processes affect compute speed and effectiveness. The question we’re out to answer today is this: if every action is stored in a node, and then connected to networks of additional nodes, how does node and network complexity affect compute speed? In other words, what are the optimized Houdini software system requirements? In this the first of a three part series about the best hardware for Houdini, we’ll be benchmarking different hardware configurations for testing Houdini’s native renderer Mantra. Structurally, even the different networks constructed can reference other networks to add additional nuance and depth of effect to the scene in question. A key characteristic of Houdini is the use of nodes, networks and assets in a step-wise or procedural manner – so modeling, lighting, rendering and visual effects are all comprised of networks of nodes the artist uses to complete the object, animation or scene. It can be used to model, render, animate and simulate objects and scenes with a great deal of precision and control non-destructively. Houdini Software is becoming one of the most popular and highly regarded CG and VFX applications today. just for the sake of saying something).Įven if you are not introverted, you may not have enough time to find the right expression in a conversation. Introverts don’t like to join a conversation when they have nothing essential to add to it (i.e. There are! Of course, the first one that comes to (my) mind is that if you are introverted (like me), you simply may not have “anything to say” in a conversation. Are there any advantages in comparison to a real conversation? I’ve done enough thinking in Czech I don’t learn anything new by doing that. Whenever I see something that could theoretically be hard for me to talk about in English, I just start thinking about it in English. My mother tongue is Czech, but I changed the primary language of thinking to English. You do all that internal speaking anyway, so why don’t you just try to use a different language? Instead of speaking to someone, speak to yourself. So we come to the original topic of this article. The problem is: how do you practise when there are no native speakers around? As with everything else, being good at something requires practice. The art of using vocabulary actively is the art of being able to find the right word fast enough. It is way too common for people who are able to understand 99% of what other people in a foreign language say not to be able to express a simple thought because they just “can’t find the right words”. Probably the hardest thing in language learning is to get your passive vocabulary to become active. How is the inner voice useful for language learning? Common thoughts such as “I must go to the doctor tomorrow”, “I wonder if it is enough”, or “I’ll get off at the next station” are virtually always expressed using words. Nevertheless, most of the thinking process we do is most succinctly expressed using a natural language. If you look at a picture, you don’t translate all you see into words -there’s a reason why we say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Of course, there are other ways of thinking: you can think in terms of a visual representation of the object you want to think about, to mention just the most common way. the “conversation with yourself” you produce when thinking using a language. It is the inner voice you “hear” while thinking, i.e. T here is one method I’ve been using for years for every single language I learn: the so called “internal monologue” or “inner voice”. #People without inner monologue how to#It will teach you how to avoid mistakes with commas, prepositions, irregular verbs, and much more.
